Rano Raraku on Easter Island

Given that it’s the Easter Holiday weekend, we thought it was fitting to make this week’s travel photo about Easter Island. This photo was captured at Rano Raraku, a volcanic crater in the Rapa Nui National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Easter Island is famous for it’s mysterious moai statues, the giant stone heads you see in the photo. It is said that close to 95% of the statues found on the island were carved from the volcanic stone at Rano Raraku, making it the quarry. Today, there are close to 400 moai statues remaining at Rano Raraku.

It’s an extraordinary place.
