Mom Warns Everyone About The Dangers Of Anti-Vaxxing After Her Daughter Ends Up In ER

in Design Nerd by

The flaming hot debate between those for and against vaccinating children has flared up once again. Registered nurse Camille Echols’ daughter Ashley recently had to be treated in the ER after being exposed to a child with chickenpox, which prompted the mom to pen a scathing essay about ‘anti-vaxxers’ and the danger they create for kids like hers.

Anti-vaxxers have used a number of medical and ethical arguments to make a case for themselves. Some take issue with the supposed ‘harmful ingredients’ inside vaccines that they believe may cause allergic reactions, pneumonia, and even neurological disabilities like autism, notions which have largely been debunked. Others are angered by laws requiring all children to be vaccinated in order to attend public schools, and accuse the government of intervening in personal medical matters.

Despite the curiosity anti-vaxxers provoke, overwhelming evidence from the Centers for Disease Control maintains that vaccines are safe for children and adults, and that they are necessary in order to protect the public. For children like Ashley Echols, who live with compromised immunity, it only takes one unvaccinated child to transmit a disease that could kill them.

The Ends of the Road (27 photos)

in Photo Nerd by

Once again I’ve spent some recent time poring over Google Maps, finding the edges of their Street View image coverage—which seems to grow by the month. I’ve always been drawn to the end of the road, to the edges of where one might be allowed to travel, whether blocked by geographic features, international borders, or simply the lack of any further road. Gathered below is a virtual visit to a few of these road ends around the world (or at least as far as the Street View drivers cover)—borders, shorelines, dead ends and overlooks from Madagascar to Colombia, from Japan to the United Arab Emirates. See if you can guess the locations before reading the captions. (And, see also a previous Ends of the Road photo essay.)

Phish Ends 2014 and Starts 2015 With Awesomeness

Phish Ends 2014 and Starts 2015 With Awesomeness

2014 may have come to an end on December 31st but it was only the beginning of the 4 night New Years Eve run for Phish at the American Airlines Arena in Miami, Fl.I’ve seen my fair share of NYE shows and also plenty of other non-holiday Phish shows.  But this run was incredible.  New Year’s Eve was typical and Phish blasted through 3 sets of powerful tunes that had everyone moving nonstop.  I figured things might slow down on January 1st because the band played late the night before and it just made sense that things would mellow out a little bit.  Ooops…I was wrong about that.  Sure there were some slower songs thrown in the mix but the second night was high energy too.  So of course it had to be January 2nd where Phish would take it easy.  Once again….I was wrong as it was another phenomenal night of music.  Going into the final show of the NYE run there was no way the band was going to phone it in or play a mellow song.  Finally, I was right.  Another rager and the band was as usual incredible.

Each night of the run had highlights.  My favorites were Down With Disease, Mikes Song and Martian Monster but those were by no means the only songs you need to find online at Livephish.com or however else you get your tunes.  Each show was awesome and I hope its not another 5 years before they make it back to South Florida!

On a side note I went over to an after party at one of the local clubs and the bands that night were The New Mastersounds and Dopapod!  When we rolled out of there at 4am after the bands playing interlocking sets the place was still packed and they guys were jamming their faces off.  If you haven’t heard either of these bands you better go find some tunes right now.
