This Program Lets You Turn Still Photos Into GIFs, And The Result Will Amaze You

in Design Nerd by

Professional photographer and artist Troy Plota  has created an amazing new software that lets people turn a single image into an incredible animated GIF in minutes. It’s called Plotagraph Pro.

So now, when you want to bring your memories to life with a GIF, there’s no need to shoot a video or capture multiple angles anymore, all you need is one single image. Then, using the magic of algorithms and prediction, your image can be brought to life in a GIF, MP4, or MOV file format. Is that cool or what?!

Schooled Into Slavery (19 photos)

in Photo Nerd by

In Senegal, thousands of children are exploited by their teachers in the name of Koranic education. Called talibes, the Arabic word for students, some 50,000 boys are forced into child labor, according to Human Rights Watch. Photographer Sebastian Gil Miranda spent two months last year traveling around the country to document the conditions of these youths. “Families do not have money to pay for the religious education of their children,” Miranda said, “so for them it is logical that the child himself be the one to finance their own education.” Housed in deplorable conditions in daaras, or schools, teachers demand talibes deliver daily begging quotas or be beaten, starved, or left out in the street.

Field Of Light: Artist Uses 50,000 Lights To Turn Desert Into Surreal Fairytale

in Design Nerd by

Bruce Munro is an internationally acclaimed British artist best known for his vast and immersive light-based installations. For this latest project, which is part of a series called Field of Light, the artist has chosen the great Australian outback as his canvas, namely the area near Uluru, the country’s spiritual center. The installation uses more than 50,000 light stems crowned with frosted-glass spheres and it covers a surface area equivalent to four football pitches.

Munro’s work is inspired by his interest in shared human experience, and the idea for this latest project came to him while traveling across the Red Desert to Uluru in 1992. During this trip he felt a compelling connection to the energy, heat and brightness of the desert landscape, and as he notes on his website, “Field of Light is the embodiment of that experience.”

Old Vespas Turned Into Modern Office Chairs

in Design Nerd by

If Vespas are the hipsters of the scooter world then these Scooter Chairs are definitely the hipsters of the office-chair world. They might not be ideal for navigating the winding alleys of Florence or Rome but they’re perfect for making your colleagues super jealous!

Designed by Bel & Bel, a studio workshop in Barcelona founded by artists and designers Carles Bel and Jesus Bel, the Scooter Chairs are made from the chassis of old original Vespas. The chairs are upholstered in imitation leather and their height can be adjusted with hydraulic pistons. They also boast a reclining feature and they even include functioning lights on the back!

The Scooter Chair is available in a variety of colors, but as they’re limited edition, anybody who wants one better hurry up and get on their bike (sorry) down to Bel & Bel. One of them can also be found on display at the Piaggio museum in Italy.

Leeser Architecture transforms Brooklyn factory into colourful co-working space

in Design Nerd by
New York-based Leeser Architecture has inserted angular and brightly coloured stairwells into an ageing industrial building in Brooklyn to create a vibrant office for creative professionals and entrepreneurs (+ slideshow).

Coworking space by Leeser Architecture

Encompassing 47,000 square feet (4,330 square metres), the Coworkrs facility is located in Gowanus, an industrial neighbourhood where new artist studios, restaurants and condo buildings have all emerged in recent years.

Leeser Architecture was charged with transforming the underused factory into a three-storey work-share facility that would accommodate creative professionals, nonprofit organisations, tech startups and other individuals and businesses looking to rent desks or private offices.

The programme includes communal work zones and enclosed offices, along with a lobby, kitchen and dining areas, conference rooms, a lounge, and a rooftop terrace. There are more than 500 desks in total.

To create visual continuity, the firm used brightly coloured angular forms throughout the building, most notably to enclose stairways that connect each floor.

Referencing origami, the stairwells feature sharp folds and bright colours – Yves Klein blue on the exterior and teal on the interior.

On one floor, the backside of the stairs – a space not often utilised – merges with a large communal table.

“The bold metal feature folds into varying functional purposes, creating communal spaces within its dynamic form,” said the firm.
